Mystery Of Chess Boxing

Hip Hop IS like a game of Chess

Just thinking about, there isn’t much I can say on the matter. I love Hip Hop. I respect the game of Chess, but never really learned it. I do, however, LOVE the Mystery of Chessboxing. Damn good movie. A certain member of the Wu-tang Clan undoubtedly drew his namesake from this movie.

Mystery Of Chess Boxing

But that’s not what this is about, sort of. You see Wu-tang member, the RZA, is widely known to “take the Queen with the Rook”. Alright, filthy minds, I meant that he like to play Chess. Geez! Anyway, it can also be said the he, along with the rest of the Clan, has all but cemented their place in the Hip Hop Hall of Fame. So why not marry the two? How about throwing a bit of social networking in for good measure? If you are curious about the mixing, head on over to Wuchess.com.

The partnership of Rza and online Chess community, Chesspark. Chesspark itself, is a site that let’s chess players from around the world share the love of the game by letting them play each other online. Casual and experienced players can pit their skills against each other. Wuchess is basically Chesspark for lovers of Hip Hop. Here, you will a community of chess players and Hip Hop heads coming together to form a more…”unique” union. Apparently, in addition to playing and socializing with other like minded folks in chess, you can make you own chess clans, compete in tournaments, practice against the computer, and get tips from pros. Also, members of the site can get access to exclusive videos and mp3 from Hip Hop artists (assumably from those associated with site, but…). Now, here comes the rub. It’s $48 a year to join (Chesspark is $40 a year). Chesspark has a free service, I believe. Honestly, I hadn’t tried either way. Here is a tour of the site, if you are interested. And here’s some tutorials, also. And you gotta love the chess pieces.

Admittedly, it’s an interesting idea. Rza has been trying to get more Hip Hop minded folks into chess. And this is not the first time such a combination has been tried, either. Before this even, there was a Hip Hop Chess Federation (of which part of the funds from Wuchess is going towards) formed to get the youth active in chess. Chess is a thinking man’s game. Hip Hop is SUPPOSED to make you think, I believe. Anything that can bring one to the other can’t be a bad thing. I can’t totally be mad at it. Every now and then I get the itch to learn to play. I remember hearing about an Black Grandmaster named Maurice Ashley who put his likeness and skills behind a PC CD-rom title named Maurice Ashley Teaches Chess. I still have the game, too. He also wrote a book called Chess for Success.

How about I end this with a couple of links stories about Wuchess, eh?

What What, Jean?

I gotta give props to one of the baddest MC’s in the game at the the moment. Or at least for as long as she’s still in the game, if the rumors are true. I’m thinking of blaming Busta, but that might not be right. Yes folks, I’m speaking on Jean Grae. Probably one of the few real MC’s (female or otherwise) still out there right now. She’s been repping strong since she was going by the name What? What? back in the day. I’m hoping the aforementioned rumors are not true(though this is making me believe it is) because pickings are slim right now and Jean stays fresh like zip loc bags and baking soda… I don’t know what that means either so let’s move on, shall we?

Anywhoo, a few months ago, I heard the song “Love Thirst“(produced by 9th Wonder) from Jean’s hopefully soon to be forthcoming album, “Jeanius“, during a little event you should have heard of called the Cupid Hunt(if you didn’t, shame on me). Props go to the Big La, Todd Kelley (check his entry here) for that one because I might not had heard it if it wasn’t for him. The song is a little different from what I’m used to hearing Jean spit, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! It’s in rotation constantly (despite what Last.fm says). Well, now there is a video for it that shows Jean…going through changes, if you will. I’m thinking sexy and Hip Hop, two words that don’t exactly taste great together. Peep out the video below and get your head nod on.

Check Jean Greazy out on Myspace for her thoughts (I believe it really is her) and some of her videos. And to Jean, if you are seeing this: I understand if you gotta, I thank you for being you. Ans SOMEBODY’S got to have the actual video for Natural Resource’s “Negro League Baseball“! I know I do, but have no way to get it on Youtube. SUX!

Quick reviews…just ’cause

The Roots – Rising Down: Go get it.

Estelle – Shine: Why don’t you already have this?

Portishead – Third
: Still need to spin this one some more, but get it anyway. Maybe they’ll get their asses into the studio more. (If any member of Portishead happens to see this, I say this with love. And where the Hell is Keybored 299 03??)

Iron Man movie: Hadn’t seen it. Shut up! I usually wait until they get to DVD anyway.

Grand Theft Auto IV: It apparently is the shit. I’ve only cracked it open and started it before getting busy with other crap. Lemme lone. If I finish it before Soul Calibur IV, that’ll be saying something.

That’s all I can think of right now. If this wasn’t enough for you. Allow me to point you to a time passer.
It’s called Typeracer. Sounds self explanatory? It is. You’re a car, you’re in a race with other cars. First one to type their way to the finish line with the given lines of text, wins. Mistakes have to be dealt with before moving on. I personally, suck, but their seems to be some jokers who can type 160 words a second (that’s insane!). There is a leaderboard, if you some choose to participate. You can also practice, which let’s you know how bad you really are. It’s pretty fun…if you like typing games.

Later!

Me love me Roots and Sulka

I love the Roots. They are one of my top five fave Hip Hop groups. This means I get pretty excited when I hear about new joints from them. The problem is, until right now, i hadn’t heard about anything new. So imagine my surprise when I check out this post on Soulbounce.com

The Roots Redeem Themselves With ‘Rising Up’ – SOULBOUNCE.COM

I didn’t know about the first song/video much less the flack from it. I must be slipping my old age. Anyway, check out the newly released track from the Roots Crew that is on the page above. It’s classic Roots hotness! Meanwhile, I’m going to go sulk in the corner…

Musical orgy?? and other tidbits

Before I get into the actual post, I wanna call to you attention some things I just ran across. This might end up being a long post because it’s two in one. The second part has been held on to for a while and I’d figured i’d just throw it out now. So……

First off, I‘ve mentioned this before, but now it’s official. By the time you read this the new X-clan should be out. Go cop that! Here is a link from Honeysoul.com (where there are other previews) or you can go straight to MP3.com and stream it or X-Clan’s site. Makes no difference to me, just go.

Second, 9th Wonder is no longer with NC’s own Little Brother. The group is also trying to get away from their label. Read on that here. Why does this kind of remind me of the way that Slum Village was going? I can imagine how this went down being that the group didn’t seem to be getting as much spotlight as 9th Wonder’s production. We’ll see how the sound of the group comes out. It sounds promising with the producers they have on tap, but 9th’s sound just put them out there.

Finally, the Beastie Boys AND the Wu-tang Clan are coming out with new albums. The latter with a tribute to ODB. It just don’t stop and I, for one, am glad.

Now that that is out of the way, on to the post. It is music related….sort of. I dedicate it to The Mistress, Divine Lavender, and Missy. Don’t ask my why, just hope no one gets offended.

P.S. I did warn you, so if you need a break, do so and come back.

—————————————————————————————————————–

Who says sex and tech don’t mix. There are many examples of this, but I will just touch on these right now. Normally, I don’t talk sex or toys in this spot and there is just one thing I have to say about that. It’s about DAMN time I did. Hell, it’s the only thing I hadn’t covered around here and outside of tech, it’s my favorite subject. I come across stuff all the time, but never mention them.

Anyway, ladies, do you like music? Do you like to have a little “me time” while listening to some? Sure, you can grab a rabbit, turn on the radio and have at it but why stop there? Why not have something for that night out or long trips? Yes, friends, we are talking about music (or voice) activated vibrators. Plug in your favorite music playing apparatus, then plug the device on or in to yourself and turn on all parties involved. Now, since I don’t know of anyone who has tried these, nor do I know of any guinea pigs who would allow me to tape them using them test any of these out for me (well maybe I know one).
If you are looking, these are for you.

First up:

iBuzz – the music activated iPod sex toy

(UPDATE) I see there is now an IBuzz Two on the market. Now you can share. REALLY. 🙂 And here is some video!

Next: The Audi-oh! I love that name, I tell you. Here is a description from Gizmodo.

But wait, there’s more. Well, at least one more.

Last, for now, is the OhMiBod. This joint looks like a tampon, no two ways about it. The scroll wheel on the Ipod controls the vibration.

OhMiBod Music Powered Vibrator – iPod vibrator, mp3 vibrator , sex toy, vibrator …

You know, I shouldn’t even have to say much more. These items kind of speak for themselves.
Need help with a playlist? No, you don’t, but here are some suggestions:

“Get it Up” by The Time
“Oops” by Tweet
“Come”, “Insatiable”, “Get Off” or any number of other songs by Prince
“I Touch Myself” by T-Boz or any number of people. Or, as a co-worker of mine suggested, “Start me up” by The Rolling Stones.
“How can I ease the pain” – Lisa Fischer (the high note near the end should be something.)

Actually, i’d like to see TGrundy or Grantlove hook something up for this. Now, that I think about, I probably could too. I’m sure, though, that the lucky person using these devices could come up with suitable playlist for their experience. If anyone does try any of these, PLEASE let me know! better still, give me your suggestions for songs. I really want to know what you’d use (or want someone to use).

It’s the perfect gift for those who like to come on the go…without going too far.

Heed the words of the Brother (Still)

Here’s the nine…

I must be slippin’ in my old age. I can’t believe I missed this. Last night, I was listening to and catching up on “On The Real” w/ Chuck D when I heard that he was talking to Brother J from the X-Clan. Come to find out that not only that X-clan and Public Enemy are now on tour, but X-clan has a new album coming out in January (the 30th from what I see).

If you don’t know X-Clan is a Hip Hop group from the 90’s and the “face” of the Blackwatch Movement (which is still active) started by group member and Activist Lumumba “Professor X the Overseer” Carson, son of civil rights activist Sonny Carson. Their first album, “To the East, Blackwards”, is classic material and their second album, “Xodus”, was more of the same. They spoke a message of pro black radicalism not totally unlike aforementioned Public Enemy. Brother J, the lead and pretty much only, MC was and still is regarded as one of the nicest on the mic. Ok, I don’t remember if he made the list, but I think he should have if he hasn’t. X-Clan helped popularize the beads and black medalions (the “afrocentric look” as would be said nowadays) that were widely worn (I hate to say fashionable, but that’s what it seemed to be) when they came out. They didn’t seem to be doing it for fashion sake, but because of what they believed in and that’s part of why they are one of my favorite groups.

The group consisted of the before mentioned Brother J and Professor X (points if you can tell what that was in reference to), DJ Sugar Shaft, Paradise (not sure what he did), and Lady MC’s Queen Mother Rage (not to be confused with Lady of Rage) and Isis, AKA Lin Que. Professor X died earlier this year, and Sugar Shaft died some years ago. Of that group, Brother J and Paradise are what’s left. I have now idea what Queen Mother Rage is doing and Lin Que was, at one pint down with the Wu Tang offshoot crew, the Deadly Venoms.

Anyway, you can read all of that elsewhere. Right now, you should check out the new video, “Weapon X” below. It’s hot, personally. I’m a little biased, granted, but it is good and Brother J proves he’s still nice with his.

And if you want to check out X-Clan, here is their website:
